India is located in southern Asia, along the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. It borders 7 other countries including Afghanistan, Nepal, Pakistan, China, Bhutan, Burma and Bangladesh. Within the Indian Ocean, it’s near Sri Lanka to the southeast. The country is known for yoga, spirituality, languages, and Bollywood.  It’s the second most populous country in the world, after China. Also, it’s the largest democratic country.

India occupies an area of 3,287,263 square kilometers (1,269,219 sq mi), which makes it the seventh-largest country by land area. From the Himalayas in the north to the tropical rain forests of the south, India has a diverse landscape. Forests cover between 20-25% of India. Some of its longest rivers are the Brahmaputra, Indus, and Ganges River. Vembanad Lake is its largest lake with a surface area of 2,033 square kilometers (785 sq mi).

In the south, the Deccan Plateau is a major landform, which forms a triangle pointing southwards. As you move toward the Ganges, it becomes flatter with rolling plains. Finally, the Himalayas dominate the northern landscape. This includes the highest point in India, the Kanchenjunga at 8,586 meters in height, in the northeast sharing a border with Nepal.
